When I was a child, I grew up in the countryside in Galway, right by the sea.
I loved the sea, and my Dad always regaled me with tales of Gráinne Mhaol the Pirate Queen.
.
My favourite story of them all, he would tell me as we would pass Oranmore Castle, sat on an outcrop facing the wild Atlantic sea. The story went, that when Gráinne was young (a child like me!) her father and brother would go out in the boats all of the time, and Gráinne wanted nothing more than to join them.
.
But every time she would ask they would say no. One day, she approached her father, and asked again to join them on the boat. “No” replied her father, as he always did. This time though, Gráinne asked “But why?” “Your hair will get caught in the rigging - and that is too dangerous.”
.
Well, Gráinne went off immediately and cut off all of her hair, and once her father saw what she had done, he had no choice but to let her come with them on the boats.
.
While Gráinne was from Mayo, I grew up in Galway, and that’s where I learnt all about her, and when I think of Galway, I think of copper. So many of the buildings around the city have copper grooves and domes, and I love how copper changes colour as it oxidises, so when I was choosing the colours for Gráinne’s hat, I chose the colours of copper.
