Audience members were stunned by The Dancehall - an joyful and exuberant fusion of Irish fashion and design, music and dance - on the opening day of Showcase 2023.
Devised by esteemed creative consultant and stylist Aisling Farinella, The Dancehall is a modern presentation of the Irish fashion and design to be found at Showcase featuring a diverse cast of models, a soundtrack of modern Irish music and a performance by contemporary dancer Robyn Byrne. Farinella’s styling was inspired by Irish dancehall - the culture of which dates back to the 1800s.
The culture of holding dances dates back to the 1800s and is still a relevant and resonant one in Irish culture to this day. “While society evolves and styles change, dance continues to be an important opportunity for coming together,” says creative director and stylist Farinella. “It’s a celebration of community and our personal physical expression.”
More than a fashion show, The Dancehall was a unique and original fashion presentation which saw Irish contemporary dancer Robyn Byrne perform an dance piece specially commissioned for Showcase. The 20 minute show featured fashion and jewellery by a wide range of exhibitors at the show which were styled in a contemporary and wearable way. Stunning examples of Irish design and craft from the Showcase Home & Gift exhibitors also featured on stage.
Contemporary Irish music formed the backdrop to the performance which included a live performance by musician, songwriter, folklorist and native Irish speaker Jonny Dillon.
